J.Crew's Fall '12 Look Book {thanks CMG!}

A big "thanks!" to CMG who let us know that she received a double sided trifold mailer of the Fall 2012 Look Book in the mail. She also shared several images of the latest J.Crew Look Book catalog. (All images courtesy of CMG.)

Did you get a copy of the new Look Book? What are your thoughts on the items slated for the upcoming Fall season? Do you think it's too early or the right time, to be thinking about the Fall season? ;)

  1. I love the sweater in look #16. I'm sure I won't be able to afford it, but it looks awesome!

  2. I really don't like the "Jenna Look" and it is overwhelming in this collection. Those glasses are so wrong. not the usual jcrew I love.

  3. I'm absolutely in love with no.4 and no.16! I wonder how much everything is going to be.

  4. Look no. 6: Is it in someone's contract that they have to show a striped shirt with a fuzzy/sequin pencil skirt every single season? ... I like look no. 1 and might be interested in the coat in no. 5, but of course it all depends on materials & price. ... All in all, though, this all seems so familiar.

  5. Curious about the shoes since the Manolo collab is no more. Love the tweed pattern/colors in Look 19. What's up with the 1982 sweaters in Look 1, 14, 17?

  6. I like the colors and textures. But note how for a fall collection, there is one full length pant and all the other "pants" are capris. Enough with shoving capris down our throats all year round.

    1. I could not agree more! Capri pants shorten the leg and are unflattering. I'd rather spend a few extra dollars for the rest of the pant.

Don't see anything I like and agree that it looks pretty familiar. The sweaters may be cute but I bet the label says acrylic. Look #8 is dorky and such obvious self-promotion by Jenna.

  7. I rec'd one yesterday and the only items that were of interest to me were the black/white striped tee, striped t-neck and I'm curious about the purse in image no. 7. Overall, the colors are pretty. Not a speck of jewelry! As more of a casual dresser, these dressed-up previews rarely entice me, although I still like to look.

  8. #4 dress-hmmmm-I want to see more. #13 pink blazer - perhaps. #26 print - so pretty-kind of old school J Crew to me, but I don't have anything like this print, so maybe the top-and the coat is great looking. Of course, fabric content, feel and price will be the determining factors. I love Pre-Fall - I always want to see what is new.

  9. Cass, agree. I live in a cold, cold state so I forget sometimes that half the country probably doesn't experience much winter, so maybe those are the jca'ers who buy capris in winter.

  10. Julie I agree the #26 print is just the kind of thing that will appeal, very old school J Crew, love it. I would like to try the top. I see a couple of handbags I like and I am interested in the dress #24.

Fall is the most exciting roll-out! I hope I get this look-book in the mail.

  11. I am underwhelmed. The yellow pea coat in No. 29 could be cute. Some of the sweaters look like they are trying to be an ironic take on a 1980s ski sweater.

  12. I went in to do a return yesterday and my favorite SA gave me a copy of this and mentioned if there was anything I was interested in to let her know. Nothing really wowed me.

  13. Loved the "idea" of look no. 4, but they ruined it with sequins AGAIN and I am guessing it will be upwards of 800 bucks. I had the skirt in look 20 in the 90s. Don't the pants in look 27 look just like the current Morse code capris? There were only two pair of shoes with id #s, 14 and 24 so I am guessing the rest were Manolo shoes and won't be available.

    1. I knew these were the "Manolo Showcase" shots the minute I realized that every look is styled with the same pointy-toed stiletto, which is kind of a shame since a heavier shoe or boot would have been more appropriate and fashion-y for a lot of these looks.

  14. I'm interested in the print of the pants in #3, although agree that I'm over capri length. I don't understand why they put white fur on the biennial in #16 - no thanks.
Fall has always been my favorite season... Hoping for some items that I really love!

  15. Liking the coat in 12 and jacket in 18 but need to see in person. Gah I love fall, this is exactly the motivation I needed to resist any more unnecessary summer purchases!

  16. Most of these are a bit too much for me - I'm lost in the gap somewhere between the actual staidness (80s patterned sweaters, madras - oh gawd!, boring crewneck sweater in #15, jumper dress thing in #4) and the ironic take on staidness as a way of making the requisite presentation of staidness more palatable to one's (that is, the designers') sensibilities (the dorkiness of #8, glittery bow critter capris in #28, discordant pattern overload in #16). The former is too staid for me. The latter, too avant garde/hipster.

I'm sure the actual pieces in stores will be more moderate. I kind of like the lavender sweater with the ribbing detail in #21, which Jenna herself wore to the Fall presentation. Also, the sparkly zigzag patterned sweater in #2 might be fun as a graphic, punchy-in-a-Madewell-way piece.

    1. Actually, I take back the part about the 80s sweaters - they're more ironic than ingenuous and belong in the latter category. A better example of the former category is the striped turtleneck in #13.

    2. The only reason I can think of that the fashion gods have brought back the Cosby sweater is to take advantage of rich people who want to look trendy but wouldn't shop in vintage stores or Goodwill to buy them like the hipsters do.

  17. I didn't get this, but I see a lot of colours I like.

  18. I want the leather jacket and yellow double breasted coat. Most of this just doesn't look that wearable to me. I actually prefered the crazy layered lookbook of a couple of years ago because at least some of the pieces were individually wearable for me. This all looks too structured, heavy and textured for me.

  19. That coat in No. 2 looks intriguing, but I bet it will cost a small fortune.

  20. Every time I see this collection one thing stands out to me: the navy jacket with piping in no. 26. I think it looks sharp and I covet it. I wonder if it's a collection item. The price will probably be too high for me.

  21. Given that I didn't care for many of the looks in the last Look Book, but still loved lots of pieces once they appeared in the catalog and store, I'm going to assume the same with this one!

  22. I agree about the capris at 5'1" they look terrible on me but climate wise they don't work most of the year. I feel the same way about coats with shorter sleeves, they are just not practical in colder weather.

  23. Nooooooo! I don't want to think about fall! Summer is just getting started! Say no to wool!

  24. Overall - meh. Seriously underwhelmed.

  25. #4 looks like a mini biennial bag. I was just commenting to a SA the other day I wished they would make a smaller version of that bag. Fingers crossed it is!

  26. Thanks for posting this! It's hard to tell by the pictures, but I'm sure I'll be lusting after a few things. I gotta see and touch the stuff. That bright blue biennial bag is calling my name!

  27. A few things caught my eye. Love the saturated colours. The "suity" looking top in No. 8 and 27 looks interesting, reminds me of the Olive Top from a few years back (the one that got away); the pretty arty top in No. 9; all of No. 20. The piped navy jacket in no. 26 looks like the Madewell Southbank Trench from this Spring. The small Biennial has me intrigued. The Cosby sweaters look plain silly.

  28. Is photo #13 wool cafe capris in baby pink? If so, they're going to be mine. I love the two pairs I have, but I bought tall so they're actually ankle length, not capris.

  29. This looks like all of the collection pieces and the higher end of the Fall collection. I'm sure there will be pieces that are much more tame. At least I hope so.

  31. I asked my personal shopper about the 2 items I was interested in - the jacket in look 18 and the pants in look 16. Here are excerpts from her response:

    - [The jacket is the] Matilda Jacket in Sweetheart Tweed (21920). It is 83% wool, 8% cotton, 6% poliacrylic, and 3% polyamide. It is tentatively priced at $498.00 and is set to debut sometime in November.

    - As for the pants in look 16, that is our Rummy Chinese Lantern Pant (15245), it is 71% polyester, 14% acrylic, 13% wool, and 2% other fiber. It is tentatively priced at $350.00 and should be debuting come September.

She warned that all the prices, colors, and debut dates are subject to change.

Those prices are way beyond what I'm interested in spending but I thought you all might be interested.

I also asked about the Tippi cardigan and she said it would be part of tomorrow's rollout. It's merino wool and comes in black, navy, marled camel, kelly green, heather grey, ivory, shocking pink, crushed grape, heather burgundy, brilliant yellow, and retro jade. I'm very much looking forward to seeing it!

  32. I'm sorry but I think a lot of those patterns are terrible..

  33. Just heard from my PS- the sweater in look 16 is 100% Merino wool, $118, and should come available in mid-September. It's available for pre-order. It's called the Reverse Fair Isle Sweater

  34. What is this and what have they done with the old J.Crew? The brand is hardly recognizable. It's not cute. It's wanna be couture. I get that Jenna brought a lot of change (to my dismay), but this has gotten ultra ridiculous. When I get my catalogs, I don't waste any time. It goes straight to the recycle bin. Sad. I'm going to pass on all of this and hope that one day, they'll get their groove back. Like Stella did.
